Sedona has always been considered an energetically unique area. The considerable iron content of the red rocks – iron oxide is what gives them their unique color – suffices as an explanation for some; others have been looking far beyond scientific rationalizations.
The Indian people from ages ago considered this a place of transformation and conducted many of their ceremonies on these lands. To this day, a large percentage of Sedona´s visitors seek some form of spiritual guidance here. Many people come to get married in this unique environment, many seek healing or a reconnection with the spiritual world.
When New Age author Dick Sutphen published a book in 1978 called “Past lives, future loves”, in which he describes a vortex experience in the Sedona area, he started a virtual vortex craze. Another renowned psychic of the era, Page Bryant, also wrote about these spots that she said emanate a strong electromagnetic energy and thus possess healing qualities, can trigger psychic experiences and enhance meditation. In Sutphen´s words, a vortex is “a high concentration of energy, a receiving station for direct influences; by definition, a state resembling a whirlpool. The vortex areas have been likened to acupressure points on the body; grids can be compared to the nervous system."

Adherents of this theory consider there to be four main powerful vortex spots in the Sedona area:
-
Bell Rock, off Highway 179 outside of the Village of Oak Creek
-
Boynton Canyon, near the Enchantment Resort on Boynton Pass Road
-
Cathedral Rock, off Back O´Beyond Road halfway between Sedona and the Village of Oak Creek
-
Airport Mesa, off Airport Road in Sedona
But a variety of others have been mapped out by others as well, and according to new age author and teachers, their specific energy patterns vary – some are described as male, some as female vortexes, some are said to be of positive or negative energy flux. There are single and twin vortices, upside-down and right-side-up ones, and there are even those that some consider UFO landing sites.
The best way to find out about the powers of the vortex is to go and see for yourself. Several tour companies in town offer guided vortex tours, or you can go on your own. The stories of vortex experiences in Sedona are many and colorful, and the one thing everyone agrees on is that each person comes back with a unique experience.
Experience the Vortex Energy
What is a vortex? You can think of these places as acupuncture spots on the Earth. Nearly everyone who goes to a vortex can feel the energy in their hands or body. Some of the vortex sites inspire you to climb to new heights and start new things. Some vortex areas help you to calm, help you to relax, and to release the negative. One area is balanced and helps you to move through confusion to get your answers, perhaps long term answers. The energy of a vortex is subtle and often elusive for someone seeking to feel it.
But its effects can be quite profound. All the vortex power spots are known for their healing energy. Healing can take the form of smiling that won’t stop or spontaneous laughter. We have seen other amazing results and watched the joy and changes in the lives of people.
